When collecting testimonials, never phrase your request anything like “We want to increase our credibility in the market, so could you send about 500 words on your experience with us.” That invites the reaction, “Why should I take time from my busy schedule because you want something?”

Ideally, write the testimonial yourself–using the client’s words to you in the course of past experience–and request permission to put their name on it. Few will object.
